John represents individuals and families in all aspects of estate planning, tax planning, and the transfer of property. His practice focuses on drafting wills and trusts, administering estates, navigating IRS matters, structuring tax‑efficient plans, and forming businesses and tax‑exempt organizations. Clients turn to John for practical, technically sound guidance that helps them make informed decisions during some of life’s most important transitions.
John regularly assists clients seeking to avoid probate, address estate and inheritance tax exposure, or structure plans for young or vulnerable beneficiaries. He also represents executors and trustees from the initial probate appearance through the final administration of an estate or trust, ensuring that every step is handled with clarity and precision.
As an attorney licensed in Virginia, Maryland, the District of Columbia, and West Virginia—and as a Certified Public Accountant and Certified Financial Planner®—John approaches each matter with a multidisciplinary perspective. His background enables him to evaluate legal, tax, and financial considerations simultaneously, giving clients comprehensive advice tailored to their goals. He has worked with a wide range of clients, including professional athletes, military members preparing for deployment, families with special‑needs planning concerns, and small business owners. He has developed a particular niche in state estate and inheritance tax planning—an area often overlooked but critically important for many families.
John also maintains a robust tax controversy practice, assisting clients with offers in compromise, IRS payment plans, estate and gift tax returns, and representation during audits and inquiries.
In addition to his legal and financial work, John serves as an Officer in the Maryland Air National Guard. Before joining Rees Broome, he spent three years with Alvarez & Marsal in Washington, D.C., focusing on state and local, federal, and international tax compliance and consulting while completing his LL.M. in Taxation at Georgetown University Law Center.
John has also served as an Adjunct Professor of Accounting at Northern Virginia Community College, where he taught federal income taxation. He has held numerous leadership roles within the legal and tax communities, including service with the Virginia State Bar, the Fairfax Bar Association, and the Northern Virginia Estate Planning Council.
John’s approach is straightforward: provide clear, practical, and technically sound guidance that helps clients move forward with confidence.
