On March 1, 2017, the Virginia Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation released a Guidance Document for housing providers on reasonable accommodation requests for assistance animals.  The Guidance Document is a joint effort between the Virginia Real Estate Board and the Fair Housing Board.  The Guidance Document identifies the trend in fair housing case law permitting reasonable accommodations for companion animals, provides best practices for housing providers, and identifies key therapeutic relationships when determining whether a resident has a disability.
