Overview

Member, Rees Broome Executive Committee

Chair, Corporate Group

ReesBroome owes its creation to the talents and drive of Joel Birken and Jon Broome (along with the late Jim Rees). Joel had just completed his L.L.M. at George Washington University School of Law when the three formed Rees, Broome & Birken in 1974.  In the years since then Joel has been elected Chairman of the Fairfax County (VA) Chamber of Commerce, President of the Fairfax Bar Association, Chair of the Virginia State Bar Association’s Standing Committee on Lawyer Discipline and has been repeatedly named by his peers to the “Best Lawyers” list in the area of corporate law.

Joel’s career has emphasized representation of closely-held and family businesses as well as business owners. He also frequently handles issues arising in professional practices. A typical client will be dealing with:

• The acquisition or sale of a business, including professional practices
•  Merger or other business combination
•  Creation of a new business entity
•  Designing and implementing succession plans and exit strategies
•  Management issues, including employment contracts, severance packages, non-compete agreements and shareholder agreements
•  Structuring shareholder rights in a closely-held corporation
